This was arguably the Premier Mens Competition in Brisbane with all 6 teams showcasing a tremendous amount of skill throughout the season. The Dare Devils again, ruled supreme. These guys have now won three Premierships in a row and are a superb team. One gets the feeling they are itching to play in the Champions' League (date to be confirmed) to test their might against some of the other TRL superpowers kicking around. Fumbles should very proud of their efforts. This was their first season and to make it through to the Grand Final was a tremendous achievement. However, they only just toppled the Rock Lobsters in the Semis who proved to be a real handful for all teams this season. The Lobsters have signed up for the next one and will rate themselves a real chance of knocking the Dare Devils off their perch. The Titans joined in week 3 and started off in Division 2. However, after a few huge wins found themselves in Division 1 and they certainly looked at home there. Like the Fumbles, these guys were new to the TRL setup and its a credit to them that they adapted so quickly. Look out for them in the summer season. When it comes to the last two sides, the Penetrators and Bromantics, these guys were both a little disappointing this season. Consistency was a major issue. In actual fact, the Bromantics beat the Dare Devils and the Penetrators drew with the Dare Devils. The Dare Devils won all their other games. Enough said.
Mens 2
This was a very competitive division. There were certainly three frontrunners through the regular rounds but Grammace came home with a wet sail and one can only wonder what they may have been like with a full bench through the season. In the end, CWA pipped the 'Beez 2-1. This capped off a great season for CWA who no doubt would be looking to go up a grade next season. For the 'Beez, it was a great effort in greasy conditions but they probably did not have the speed to match CWA around the play the ball. The Sheeshas were again very consistent. They are a bit like the Gold Coast Titans in that they building towards some great things. They again are back next season and I wouldn't be surprised if they go all the way. Kooga had a disappointing season. Too often they were starting with 5 or 6 guys and that really puts you behind the 8-ball in TRL. They seemed to get their act together late in the season with a couple of wins but it was too little, too late. As for Complete Domination, these guys have enormous potential. Every now and then you get a glimpse of what they could be and I anticipate they are will be a future Div 1 side.
Mens 3
The Big Hounds are now veterans of the game. Some of their players are playing 3 times a week and it shows. They were simply too good for all other sides this season. Pineapple Express certainly gave them a fright in the Grand Final and it really was a testament to the improvement of the 'Express to come that close after being flogged by the 'Hounds earlier in the seaosn. The Scorgasms would have rated their chances of winning the title after knocking off the Big Hounds in week 8 but they suffered a shock semi-final loss to the Express in week 10. It was a disappointing end to their Finals aspirations but they know they are not far off the mark and they are coming back next seaosn for another crack at the silverware. The Renos play a great brand of TRL. They are very competitive on the field but are terrific sports. They did well in their first season to make it through to the semi-finals. They recorded some impressive wins throughtout the season and it will be interesting to see how they fare next season. TOFOG improved out of sight over the course of the season. They went from easy beats to genuine competitors and in fact, knocked off the Blue Balls to claim 5th spot. Well done on your season. As for Blue Balls, it was a case of 'what might have been'. All these guys need to do is get rid of the silly turnovers and they could be a Div 2 side in a season. They probably have the potential to really do some damage as they have skill to burn across the park...they just need that little bit of discipline. Still - plenty to like about their first up season of TRL.
Mixed 1
It was the end of week 5 and I walked over to a team that had just won 15-4 in Division 2. I said "I think you'll have to go up a Division". An unnamed player shot back, "..yeah right, we will get flogged". This team was Touche and they did anything but "get flogged" in Division 1. Aside from going down 5-4 to Getsome in week 9, they won every other game during the season and have grown into one of TRL's most dangerous mixed sides. Congratulations on a fantastic season! Getsome have played in about 2 thouuusand grand finals and unfortunately, are yet to have won one. They boast some of the best individual players in the whole of TRL including Wallaby player, Digby Ioane. There was not a lot wrong with their season. They got off to a slow start but did enough to make the semi-finals before toppling the Butterhahns. In the Grand Final, they lost by 2 tries. They seem to be the St Kilda of TRL but I tell you what, I'd rather make a Grand Final and lose than not be in one at all. They will push for bigger things next season...I'll be watching the results of the Getsome Juggernaut with interest. The Butterhahns had probably their best season to date and were looking like a safe bet to make the Grand Final. They were unlucky to go down to the in-form Getsome but should still be happy with their efforts over the course of the season and were in fact, minor premiers. The Lobsters (of the Randy variety) had a great season. They again fell short at the semi-final stage but had some thumping wins. They really are a great side and will no doubt come back in search of the elusive Premiership in seasons to come. Gone in a Flash had a disappointing season by their illustrious standards. Times have changed and Div 1 Mixed at Shaw Road is now an extremely competitive and high standard division. The 'Flash are still capable of winning it though! The 'Bulls had an up and down season. They matched it with everyone. They also suffered a few losses that should have been wins. It really was a much better season than their 6th positioning suggested.
Mixed 2
The Average Joes had a magnificent season. They started in Div 1 but after being moved down, had some fantastic games in Div 2. They came up against a spirited Meerkats in the Grand Final and whilst they won by 3 tries, it really was a close and intense game. The Meerkats improved a great deal on their efforts of the previous season. They should be proud of their achievement this season. People with Crazy Skill (aka PwC) had a great season. They were concerned at first with their placement in Division 2 but they showed that they can match it with anyone and they certainly belong at this level. TEIAM were competing in their first every TRL season and had some impressive victories. They probably have the potential to play Division 1 when they have their full team in attendance. I am predicting big things from them next season. Touchy Subject went from frontrunners to missing out on the top 4. It was a bizarre last few weeks for a side I rate as a Division 1 team. Still, some very impressive wins this season including a thumping 19-0 victory in week 3. When it all clicks for them, they are unbeatable. The Mortimers were dominating Division 3 before being moved up to Division 2. They started Div 2 with a win but struggled to emulate their form of the first 4 rounds of competition, over the last few weeks. They are definitely a Div 2 side but perhaps the shift up pyched out some players in the lineup. Still, they had some great wins over the course of the season and were competitive in every game they played. Holding Redlich were another team that got a little flustered when they were thrust into Division 2 but they were more than up to the challenge. Whilst they finished 7th, there was about 2 points separating 3rd and 7th before the finals. It really was a close competition. HR will be looking to rediscover their Premiership winning form next season. Out of Control were a new team to the TRL setup and whilst they finished 8th, they lost a number of games by very small margins. They were no easy beats and with a bit of luck, could have been playing finals TRL. Well done on your first season.
Mixed 3
The Honey Badgers were new to TRL this season and what a season it was for them. They won the Grand Final 5-0 and they had to overcome TRL veterans, the Gamblers - a great side. Tremendous season! The Gamblers also had a great season after a slowish start. They have a great kicking game and would probably be looking (along with the Badgers) to step up a Division potentially. The Battlers were unlucky to go down in their semi-final to the Badgers...it was a very close game that went into extra time. Still they had a very consistent season and have come a long way since the early days of last season. They are a well drilled and oiled unit these days under co-captains Dom and Des. Sang Yang did a great job to make the semi-finals after a disastrous start to their season in Division 2. In the end, they just went down to the Gamblers in the semi-final but it was a great finish to a season that was looking pretty miserable around the halfway mark. They also have won the Wildcard prize for biggest winning margin (+11). This will entitle them to $100 off next season. The Rhinos were a competitive unit and challenged all the top sides. This was their first season and Ben and the team will no doubt rate their chances of pushing for finals glory next time around. The Random Touchers had arguably their best season to date. Some other seasons have been kinder to them results wise but there were so many games they went within a whisker of winning and as a unit, they are playing so much better across the board. I think they will get a Grand Final appearance very soon....things are building. The JQ Raiders had a slow start but by the end of the competition, had found their feet and recorded a stirring result in week 10 overcoming Looking to Score. Everyone gets in and has a crack in this team and its great to see. The results will come for them next seaosn (with a season's experience under their belt). Looking to Score had a similar season to the Raiders with a few more wins during the regular season. They should be proud of the improvement over the course of the season and like the Raiders, I think more favourable results will flow next season. Prizes
